Did you know?

Products cannot achieve LEED® certification nor can their incorporation guarantee that buildings will automatically achieve a LEED® credit, prerequisite or certification. However it is useful to understand where products can enhance the sustainable design of a building.

Sustainable building rating systems such as LEED® - Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, are rapidly becoming large market drivers to encourage sustainability for the built environment.

As these programs certify the holistic sustainable design of a building, they do not evaluate or certify building products.

This is why Green Alberta offers the following LEED® related services:

LEED® Marketing:

  • Obtain advice from LEED® experts on how your product and or service is compatible with LEED®, how to properly use the terminology and sell your product or service to design professionals.
  • Walk away with a professional independently reviewed LEED® compatibility chart and add it to your enhanced product listing on our database for everyone to download.
  • LEED® Compatibility Charts, at a glance, help manufacturers and design professionals alike to understand how a product can aid in the achievement of a credit or prerequisite for a building design registered to receive LEED® certification.
LEED® Documentation:
  • Learn what documentation is required of a manufacturer to have prepared and ready to submit when their product is specified on a LEED® project.
  • Walk away with the actual LEED® documentation and add it to your enhanced product listing on our database for everyone to download.

For example, if a building is attempting to achieve the LEED® credit for recycled content, the project team has to select materials from all aspects of the project in order to achieve this credit. Architectural products such as siding, structural products such as concrete, and interior design products such as drywall, paint, acoustic ceiling tiles, and carpet are all considered. In this way, it is the combination of all products used on the project that must work together to achieve the recycled content credit.

There are a growing number different LEED® rating systems, many with different credit names and numbers. Therefore your product may require a different LEED® compatibility chart for each system. Currently in Canada, two rating systems are in operation. Green Alberta offers manufacturers the option of selecting a LEED® Compatibility Chart for either LEED® for New Construction (NC) or LEED® for Commercial Interiors (CI). LEED® Compatibility charts for US rating systems can also be completed upon request.
