There's a new trend in the roofing tile industry signified by the increasing popularity of concrete roof tiles.

Concrete roof tiles have been around for years, but they are now being used more readily over conventional roof materials such as asphalt, cedar and steel. They are becoming more widely available for residential, commercial and institutional use.

The popularity of concrete tiles is related to the benefits they provide over conventional products. Unicrete Products Ltd. - a locally based roof tile manufacturer - speaks of the advantages of their tiles in terms of life-cycle costing.

Simply stated, concrete roof tiles have a long service life, which means reduced maintenance on a roof. Unicrete tiles include a 50 year transferable warranty, but the tiles are expected to last 60-80 years.

Similarly, the tiles are 100% recyclable and contain recycled materials such as fly ash and iron oxide.

Approximately 5-10% of landfill material is roof waste, so by manufacturing tiles, which last longer and which are recyclable, less waste is discarded.

In addition to a long service life, Unicrete's tiles enable building systems to save energy. These savings are possible because the product has an under-tile ventilation system, so heat that is normally trapped in an attic gets vented out reducing the need for a cooling system.

Unicrete tiles integrate well with solar panels, adding to the energy saving potential of the product. In terms of LEED® the tiles are compatible with credits regarding recycled content and local manufacturing.

Green Alberta is proud to announce that Unicrete tiles will be one of several featured products in our database. All the appropriate LEED® documentation will be available for download at the push of a button.
